Prompt Engineering·Getting Started·2 min read·Sep 5, 2026

What this free prompt-writing guide covers, who it's for, and how it connects to the AI Engineering course.

Prompt engineering is the practice of writing instructions precise enough that an AI model produces exactly the output you had in mind, not something close to it. Loose instructions get you a loose answer; specific, well-shaped ones get you something you can actually use.

This guide is the free foundation the AI Engineering course builds on. It's a living document: new chapters are added over time, and every chapter here started as a one-line entry before it had a word of content.

  • Write instructions that get you exactly what you need, on the first try
  • Hand the model the context it's missing instead of assuming it knows your situation
  • Control length, format, and tone instead of accepting whatever comes back
  • Assign a role or perspective to shape depth and voice
  • Set boundaries that keep a response on-topic without strangling it
  • Teach a pattern with examples instead of describing it in prose
  • Ask for reasoning, not just an answer, when a task has multiple steps
  • Diagnose a bad response fast instead of starting over from scratch
